Gardening~Part 1 | Summer Tips | Better Living Essentials

by msim621 on May 23, 2011

Spring has been in the air, rain has been a daily event for weeks, and now the sun is coming out.  Our lawns are looking like hay fields, our gardens need planted, flower beds need cleaned, and garage needs cleaned. What project do we do first?  We all make our lists of summer projects that need to be done.

I am finding the joys of trying to work out side with a 3 1/2 year old and an almost 9 month old, which can be very challenging at times. I am learning to enjoy every second of every day.  Outside work is one of our families favorite parts of the year.  Outside we can incorporate some many things: the use of essential oils to keep bugs off, use oils/Thieves Household Cleaner in the garden and while out shopping. Remember  to drink lots of water while working outside (helps with weight loss and working burns calories), and at the end of the day coming in to enjoy fresh pork chops (that have cooked in the crock pot all day, just falling off the bones and seasoned with Italian dressing).

Essential Oils, Etc. to use to repel bugs/insects:

~Thieves Cleaner mixed with water (about 1 capful to 1 quart of water).  Spray around the outside doors to help keep the insects out–works great–you still might get a few but nothing like before.

~Every spring, I have a healthy invasion of little black ants that come into my kitchen for a few weeks. I happened to grab a squirt bottle with a dilution of Thieves Cleaner and give that a try.

~Had a problem with flies buzzing around the food in the kitchen. Had a bottle of Grapefruit handy and just opened it and set the bottle on the kitchen counter and the flies stayed away from the food.

~Mosquitoes Mix: a 16 oz bottle half full of V-6; then put about 20 drops each of Euclayptus Globulus, Peppermintand Lemon Oil. We mixed it pretty strong because being out in the heat of the summer you are sure to sweat some of it off.

~GARDEN PROTECTION: How I protected my vegetable garden from animal intrusion was by using Clove oil. Most animals (deer, rabbits, etc.) do not like the smell of cloves. I put a few drops of Clove oil in a spray bucket and sprayed around perimeter of garden on a daily basis. I had no problem with animals raiding my garden and had a spectacular garden of growth.

Essential Oils to Use if you get bug bites, Etc.:

~Peppermint oil works great on ticks. My puppy had a tick and it worked great at removing it. ~Dona Burke

~When an insect sting happens you should immediately apply drops of Lavender essential oil on the spot/sting. This should help to prevent pain and large swelling.

    Mary,
those oils are amazing. I also use Purification for mosquitos–keeps them away. Good tips about hydrating and protecting yourself
